The athletes are ready. The race is about to commence.
The quest for the coveted Ohio Valley Athletic Conference football championship and — hopefully for some — a chance to extend the season beyond the promised 10 games is ready to get started.
The 2022 high school football opens this week in Ohio and the West Virginia teams will begin their seasons next week. All of the teams, regardless of the start date, have their sights set on the prizes that come to the victors.
Several intriguing games are on the schedule for tonight, including Barnesville at Buckeye Local, Monroe Central visiting Edison, Frontier trekking to Bridgeport and River going south to take on Marietta.
Another full slate of games is ready for their debuts on Friday with the likes of Shadyside heading to Martins Ferry in a matchup of new coaches. St. Clairsville hosts a formidable Canton South squad, while Steubenville opens with Louisville.

The 90-plus page supplement features team-by-team breakdowns of our area teams. All told, upwards of 30 high schools and another eight colleges are contained in the edition. On top of the previews, pictures of key players as well as all team’s schedules are contained.
This year’s preview focuses on the race for the OVAC titles. That race will come into focus over the course of the next 12 weeks.
Our preview section isn’t the only place where Ohio Valley football fans can dive into information on their favorite teams. This season, The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register has partnered with WVU Medicine to offer an enhanced online experience.

West Virginia kicks off its season on Thursday, Sept. 1 against arch rival Pitt as the “Backyard Brawl” is rekindled after a 10-year hiatus. The Mountaineers come into a key season for Coach Neal Brown after losing to Minnesota in last season’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl.
Ohio State, which is ranked No. 2 in the AP’s Preseason Poll, opens on Saturday, Sept 3 against No. 5 Notre Dame in Columbus. The Buckeyes are trying to get back to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2020.
Marshall makes its debut in the Sun Belt Conference after spending the last 16 seasons in Conference USA. The Thundering Herd on Sept. 3 against Norfolk State.
Locally, Wheeling University and West Liberty are set to begin their seasons on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Seton Hill and at Clarion, respectively. The Cardinals and Hilltoppers will meet each other on Oct. 22 at West Liberty.
Bethany will once again play in the Presidents Athletic Conference. The Bison, who are coming off a tough campaign in 2021, will open at home against Hiram.
