West Indies on Wednesday beat Zimbabwe by 31 runs in the eighth match of the T20 World Cup at the Bellerive Oval to keep their Super 12 hopes alive. Having lost their first game in a shocker to Scotland, the Windies needed to win today’s game to ensure that they still were in contention. Besides Johnson Charles, all the other Windies batters disappointed yet again as they were restricted to 153. But pacer Alzarri Joseph held the fort as he picked up four crucial wickets, including a set Luke Jongwe to seal the match in the Windies’ favour.
Earlier, Windies’ skipper Nicholas Pooran won the toss and opted to bat. After the early dismissal of Kyle Mayers, Charles and Evin Lewis added 49 runs for the second wicket. Another collapse saw Windies being reduced to 101/6 in the 14th over but with another 49-run stand, Rovman Powell and Akeal Hosein made sure that the two-time champions could post 153. Zimbabwe’s in-form all-rounder Sikandar Raza picked three wickets, finishing with figures of 4-0-19-3.
In the chase, Zimbabwe never looked settled as they kept losing wickets often. Alzarri Joseph got the early breakthrough with the wicket of Regis Chakabva and went to dismiss Tony Munyonga, Jongwe and Richard Ngarava. His figures were a tad bit better than Raza’s. at 4-0-16-4.
