outhampton vs Arsenal LIVE!
The Gunners paid a visit to St Mary’s this afternoon as they looked to restore their four-point gap at the Premier League summit. Such a cushion was whittled back down to a solitary one courtesy of Manchester City’s win over Brighton yesterday, and now stands at two after a rare draw on the south coast.
Mikel Arteta’s side were brimming with confidence amid genuine optimism over a sustained title challenge as they bid to claim top spot heading into the mid-season World Cup break, while Southampton did get their first victory in six games at Bournemouth in midweek but the pressure remained on manager Ralph Hasenhuttl after a tough start to the campaign.
Xhaka fired Arsenal into a deserved early lead on the day, only for Stuart Armstrong’s equaliser to ensure they dropped points for only the second time this season. Follow Arsenal vs Southampton reaction LIVE below, with Simon Collings reporting from the stadium.
Here’s Southampton’s goalscorer talking to Sky Sports…
“It was always going to be a hard game against a good opposition. Not the perfect start for us and still, we had to defend and wait for counter-attacks, that was the rhythm of the game.
“But to get a point against the great teams is obviously amazing for us.”
