The Socceroos have edged past New Zealand 1-0 at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday night.
In their first match against each other in over a decade, it was the All Whites that had a great earlier chance which Tim Payne couldn’t capitalise on.
Australia eventually worked their way into the game and would take the lead in the 33rd minute courtesy of a super strike from Awer Mabil.
After going into half-time behind, New Zealand emerged from the break desperate to draw level and looked the more likely to strike despite occasional flashes from the Socceroos going forward.
Graham Arnold’s side held firm at the back though to claim a 1-0 win in their last match on home soil before the World Cup.
New Zealand will now host Australia in Auckland on Sunday in their second and final friendly with the Socceroos expected to field a more experimental starting side.

5 mins to kick-off: The sides are now out on the pitch with the anthems about to be sung.
