Oklahoma Football: OU No. 4 seed in CFP in USA TODAY bowl projection – Sooners Wire

The Oklahoma Sooners don’t exactly have a successful history in the college football playoff as the No. 4 seed against the No. 1 seed. Most recently as the No. 4, they were dominated by Joe Burrow’s LSU 63-28.
So it was a little harrowing for Sooners fans when Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports projected the Sooners getting into the playoff as the No. 4 team facing off against the Georgia Bulldogs in the first round. In the Peach Bowl, no less. Smith has Alabama facing Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl in the other CFP semifinal.
Smith also has Baylor facing Texas A&M in the Sugar Bowl this season, so it would seem he’s predicting an OU-Baylor Big 12 Championship game with the Sooners coming out on top at this stage in the season.
As for who the Sooners would match up better against in the first round of the CFP, Alabama or Georgia, it’s impossible to know for sure. But Alabama’s pass rush scares me more than anything Georgia has at the moment.
It’s not like that matters. If the Sooners want to win a national championship, facing one or both of Alabama or Georgia is inevitable.
Smith has Georgia winning that game against OU and facing Alabama in the national championship, a repeat of last year’s affair.
Making the playoff would be great for Brent Venables in his first season as a head coach, and if OU could make it a game against the Bulldogs, it would be great for the program as the move to the SEC lurks closer and closer. Playing the Bulldogs in an environment like that would also be a great experience for all the younger players on the roster.
It’s far too early to know who Oklahoma would be facing in a playoff scenario, but assuming the SEC sends two teams, it would be a tough contest either way.
The Sooners ending their losing streak in the playoff and getting the Big 12’s lone playoff win, or wins, before leaving for the SEC would be quite the way to end the season.
