NEWTON FALLS — Village council has approved updates to the zoning code related to the residential addiction services of treatment facilities.
Second Ward Councilman John Baryak said this week that the “sober houses have become a hot button topic in the community for months.”
“With what is in place in zoning, no one will be able to sneak any sober houses in overnight,” Baryak said.
He said the new updates to the zoning code will make sure licenses are in place and zoning guidelines are followed for them to be in the community.
Law Director Brad Bryan said the restrictions will be in place for such establishments, such as no more than five people in one single-family facility in a residential area.
First Ward Councilman Bud Fetteroff said the halfway houses will not be permitted in certain areas.
“You can’t prohibit operations of these types of facilities in residential areas as long as there is no more than five people living there,” Bryan said. “These facilities have to be licensed by the state and meet certain requirements. They will need to apply for an occupancy permit and we can check and see if they meet the zoning code requirements.”
