Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle have the “money and clout” to complete a January deal for James Maddison.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old could be the “missing piece of the puzzle” in the Magpies’ midfield.
According to the Northern Echo (7 September), Newcastle will try again to sign Maddison in January and are hopeful of being able to prise him to St James’ Park.
As revealed by this site last month (2 August), Leicester rejected a second Newcastle bid for Maddison worth around £50million.
Football Insider also revealed (1 August) that the Foxes value the midfielder at around £60million and will let him go at that sum.
Maddison is out of contract in June 2024 and is reportedly in talks with Leicester over extending his deal.

When asked if that contract situation could open the door to a Magpies swoop, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think so.
“Newcastle have proven that when they set their sights on a player, they don’t back down.
“That number 10, creative midfielder – he’s the missing piece of the puzzle right now. Someone who can break into the box and find the final pass.
“He’s very good on set-pieces too.
“It’s another step forward to improving their squad, and he’d give them a lot more options.
“They won’t give up the chase. They’ve got the money, they’ve got the clout – and they’re showing that they can continue to progress up the table.
“Eddie Howe is doing a fantastic job of assembling a really competitive squad there.”
