Liverpool were “naive” to be confident in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, according to Kevin Campbell.
The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Real Madrid and Man City will “gazump” the Reds next summer.
Bellingham is attracting the interest of a host of Europe’s top clubs ahead of 2023.
Football Insider revealed on 30 July that Liverpool were laying the groundwork behind the scenes on their pursuit of the England international and were even quietly confident at that point of agreeing a deal.
However, it is now understood (29 October) that the Merseyside club fear they will be priced out of a move for the midfielder.
Borussia Dortmund believe the midfielder could go for a “huge fee” next year.

Bellingham’s contract with Borussia Dortmund runs until the end of June 2025.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Campbell said: “Bellingham is not a Liverpool player, that is the bottom line.
“It is a bit naive to think Liverpool would be able to sign him without the likes of Real Madrid and Man City mounting a serious challenge.
“If the club are serious about getting him they will have to go and pay up.
“There is so many other teams that are hungry for top young players like Bellingham. If you alert everyone that you really want to sign someone, which seems the case with Liverpool and Bellingham, other clubs will gazump you.
“I understand fans’ frustrations but if he is not your player, you cannot get expect him to sign for you.”
In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed Liverpool are in line for a ‘bigger slice of the pie’ as £5billion-plus windfall on cards.
