Noel Whelan has claimed Leon King’s next contract could include a release clause which allows him to leave Rangers “if the money’s right”.
The former Leeds and Rangers striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted including such an agreement would protect the Ibrox club from losing the 18-year-old for a knockdown fee.
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (18 October) that Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt have joined Man United, Leeds United and Newcastle United in the hunt for King.
According to The Athletic (20 October), Rangers are set to offer the centre-back a third contract in three years as they attempt to lock down his services.
King’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2024.
The Scotland Under-21 has started seven games so far this term but was hooked at half-time during Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Livingston on Saturday (22 October).

Whelan claimed a release clause in a new deal would be a “win-win for all parties”.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s the wise thing to do for both parties.
“If the agent isn’t asking for that to be included, then there’s a real problem.
“When you’ve got a young kid doing well and there’s speculation, it’s the intelligent thing to do.
“It covers Rangers’ back in terms of the fee they’ll get, and it allows King to be released if the money is right.
“It’s a win-win for all parties.”
Rangers are second in the Scottish Premiership, sitting four points adrift of league leaders Celtic.
King has been thrust into the starting lineup after injuries to the likes of Connor Goldson, John Souttar, and Filip Helander.
