Jon Dahl Tomasson offers update on Scott Wharton and Daniel Ayala’s current situations at Blackburn Rovers – Football League World

  • September 9, 2022

Blackburn have started the new season well under Jon Dahl Tomasson, having won four of their opening eight fixtures.

It’s left the club in seventh and despite potentially some fears that a new boss might mean a tail off in form this campaign, so far the signs are positive that Rovers could still be a force in the Championship this season.
This weekend, the side have a chance to not only add another three points to their tally and potentially break into the play-off spots but also to get one over on their local rivals Wigan. Ahead of the game though, Blackburn boss Tomasson has revealed via the club’s official Twitter account that they won’t be able to use Scott Wharton for this fixture – but they may be able to call upon Daniel Ayala in some capacity.
Wharton has played in only two league games so far this season but was a regular last time around, managing 30 outings during the 2021/22 campaign. The club have had to make do without him on a few occasions already then this season and might have to continue to do so for this game against the Latics too.
Sammie Szmodics is another name that could be back in the fold, which is a boost to Rovers supporters. After signing in a summer deal from Peterborough, the forward has already hit the ground running at Ewood Park with a goal already in just five games. He too is available for selection it seems, which gives them another option for their frontline.

The Verdict
Jon Dahl Tomasson should have some solid options to come back into the team this weekend then, with Szmodics already excelling at Ewood Park.
The forward has already hit the back of the net and his creativity has proved extremely helpful in the Blackburn frontline this season so far. Him coming back into the first-team equation should be good news for the club’s supporters then and bad news for Wigan too.

Daniel Ayala has also been somewhat of a regular in the team and provides another valuable option at the back for them. Him being available gives them more depth in their defence and will also be a boost for Tomasson. They should have a very good talent pool available to them for this Wigan fixture then.
You would have to fancy Rovers for the tie considering the positive injury news now – although Wharton still being sidelined isn’t great news for the club.
