IU football: Tom Allen gives injury update on Cam Camper, DJ Matthews, Jaylin Williams – 247Sports

  • October 3, 2022

The injury and illness bug hasn’t been kind to Indiana in recent weeks. After losing star receiver and returner D.J. Matthews Jr. last week against Cincinnati, the Hoosiers received even more bad news ahead of Saturday’s game at Nebraska when leading receiver Cam Camper was ruled out due to illness.
Though Matthews made the trip to Lincoln with Indiana and attempted to go through pregame warmups, he ultimately did not dress for the game and was not available to play. Camper’s illness, which Allen said is non-Covid related, wasn’t announced until just before kickoff, and later revealed that the junior receiver didn’t make the road trip with the Hoosiers.
Then, as if losing Matthews and Camper wasn’t enough, Indiana All-Big Ten cornerback Jaylin Williams suffered a shoulder injury late in the first half against Nebraska. Williams attempted to play through the injury and logged a few snaps, but it was clear he wasn’t 100 percent due to the injury.
After the game, Indiana head coach Tom Allen gave an update on Camper, Matthews and Williams, and when we might expect to see each of those three players back on the field for the Hoosiers.
Below is the full excerpt from Allen on Camper, Matthews and Williams:
On Cam Camper:
“Cam’s got a non-Covid related illness that, hopefully, he should be back from here soon. But wasn’t able to play, and something that we don’t have any control over. So he’ll be okay, but couldn’t bring him on the trip.”
On D.J. Matthews:
“DJ was here, warmed up, tried to see if he could go. Still not quite 100 percent yet, and don’t wanna do anything to set him back. We need him, without question, for the long haul. So hopefully we’ll get both those guys back next week, if at all possible.”
On Jaylin Williams:
“Well, fortunately — he did injure his shoulder on that play — but he did come back and play a few snaps. We’ll go through and there’s different AC sprains that you have different degrees of, so we’ll evaluate that. And, obviously within the realm of our medical staff, we’ll do what we can to get him back as soon as possible so he can help us. But he did come back in the game and play a few snaps.
“But other guys at the cornerback position gotta rise up, and two really good ones that — I thought one play Tiawan made was a phenomenal play, and I thought Jaylin had a few good ones, too. But gotta couple holes that we can’t have from that position, but (Nebraska) has some talented receivers as well. But, hope to get (Jaylin Williams) back and get him ready for next week.”
