Indiana football lost a major piece to its defense several weeks ago against Nebraska when fifth-year linebacker and team captain Cam Jones suffered a foot injury. In the three games since, Jones has not suited up for the Hoosiers as his rehab process appears to be lengthy.
However, Indiana’s coaching staff is doing everything it can to keep Jones, who’s a three-time captain, engaged and part of the team, despite the injury. Most recently, Jones made the trip with Indiana last week for its road game against Rutgers, which allowed Jones to remain a vocal leader on the sidelines.
With Indiana coming off of a bye week, Jones sat down with the media to discuss his injury, how the rehab process is going and when we might expect to see him back on the field this season.
Below are excerpts from Jones’ media availability session:
When did the injury occur?
“It’s just a foot injury, something that’s out of my control,” Jones said. “But like I said, just continue to rehab and take care of it every single day.”
“… It was actually in the second quarter (against Nebraska), I think it was on a goal-line stop. I kind of just felt the injury, but I was able to finish that game. And I was able to get in the training room and finish the game, but yeah, second quarter.”
“… I kind of felt it as soon as the play happened. It was kind of an instant reaction… I definitely informed my trainers, and I kind of be honest with them because they’d be honest with me, right? It was just kind of one of those things like mindset, you know, just got to finish, always been taught to finish no matter what if I can, and I was I was able to do that. So I’m just glad I was able to finish that game with the guys.”
How is the rehab process going?
“Everything is looking pretty good. So just gotta stay patient and keep attacking it day by day.”
“… It hurts not to be out there, but I also understand that patience is the key. It’s been killing me, but I know that something good is always gonna come. So just keep going and keep attacking, you know, attacking mindset. And just know that any game that I’m able to play in, I make the best opportunity of it.”
“… So I’ve just been working with coach Wellman, Jacob and Kyle in the training room, just things that I am able to do every single day. I probably get like, definitely try to get a workout in every single day with coach Wellman, no matter what that looks like. But if I’m able to get a second [workout] in, I try to do that as well in the training room. So just things that I’m able to do — ankle mobility, calf, be able to get a full body lift in. So we’ve been figuring a couple things out.”
