Iowa Football: Kirk Ferentz updates quarterback situation ahead of Northwestern – 247Sports

  • October 26, 2022

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz spoke with the media on Tuesday ahead of the Hawkeyes’ matchup against Northwestern.
Ferentz was asked about the quarterback situation entering the matchup against the Wildcats. In this past Saturday’s loss to Ohio State, Iowa decided to make a quarterback change as the Hawkeyes replaced starter Spencer Petras with backup Alex Padilla.
Petras threw two interceptions against the Buckeyes in the first half and was 6-of-14 for 49 yards before putting the red hat on. Padilla came into the game and turned the ball in two of his first three plays under center, and finished the contest completing 5-of-10 passes for 32 yards with an interception and a fumble.
It sounds like an open quarterback battle going into the contest against Northwestern.
“We haven’t made a decision yet and we’re not sure when we will,” Ferentz said on Tuesday. “We’re letting both guys work with the ones, rotating them in and out, so we’ll play that out and make a decision during the week, and go from there.”
“We’re not planning on a rotation at this point, but anything is possible. I’m not going to rule it out. Preferably, we wouldn’t want to do that and preferably, whoever starts, is not looking over their shoulder. We have to get it going offensively and show some production, too. Hopefully whoever is in there can help us do that. That’s the team goal. There is a balancing act that goes on with that because you don’t want to make a decision based on one play, or something like that. We’ll make a decision and ride with it for a little bit.”
Iowa and Northwestern are set to kickoff inside Kinnick Stadium this coming Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 PM CT on ESPN2.
