Heisman Trophy watch: Updated odds for Hendon Hooker, other top candidates to win 2022 award – Sporting News

  • October 29, 2022

The Heisman Trophy race will heat up in November.
The top candidates, however, are looking to make a statement on Halloween weekend. That includes top contender Hendon Hooker, who has another showcase game for No. 3 Tennessee against No. 19 Kentucky and projected first-round pick Will Levis.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud will lead No. 2 Ohio State into a showdown at No. 13 Penn State, and running back Blake Corum has a rivalry matchup with Michigan State in prime time.
BETTING PREVIEWS: Ohio State-Penn State | Michigan-Michigan State
The award will be given out on Dec. 10, and Alabama quarterback Bryce Young still is trying to become the first two-time winner since Ohio State’s Archie Griffin. Young is on a bye this week before a Week 10 showdown at No. 18 LSU
Here is a look at the current Heisman odds, the top six potential finalists and need-to-know-items for the Heisman race:
A look at the latest Heisman Trophy odds heading into Week 9:
2022 stats: 2,023 passing yards, 70%, 28 TDs, 4 INTs
Stroud leads the FBS in TD passes, and he almost quietly has 289 passing yards per game, which is only 10 yards behind Hooker. Stroud has thrown an interception each of the last four weeks, and he doesn’t pile on rushing statistics. The stage against Penn State should be suitable. This is the toughest road game on the Buckeyes’ schedule. The Nittany Lions have the best secondary that Stroud will have seen to this point in the season.
2022 stats: 2,093 yards, 70.6% 18 TDs, 1 INT
Hooker has the signature performance of the season to date in the victory against Alabama. He passed for 385 yards and five TDs with just one interception in that 52-49 thriller. He can fortify that campaign the next two weeks with victories against Kentucky and No. 1 Georgia. He finished with 316 yards and four TDs in a 45-42 victory against the Wildcats last year.

2022 stats: 1,971 yards, 63.9%, 19 TDs, 1 INT
The Trojans are coming off a bye week after the 43-42 loss to No. 14 Utah; a game in which Williams finished with 381 passing yards and five TDs. USC still has high-profile regular-season games against No. 12 UCLA and Notre Dame. If he leads a Pac-12 championship run and USC reaches the College Football Playoff, then he could easily win the award. After all, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray did that for Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma. The Trojans resume action at Arizona in Week 9.
2022 stats: 146 attempts, 901 rushing yards, 6.2 ypc., 13 TDs
Corum ranks seventh in the FBS in rushing yards and is tied for the lead in rushing TDs. The last Michigan running back to be invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony was Chris Perry, who had 51 carries for 219 yards in a 27-20 victory against the Spartans that season. We doubt Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh feeds Corum that many carries, but this remains a great opportunity for a monster performance that resonates with voters.
2022 stats: 1,906 passing yards, 66.3%, 18 TDs, 3 INTs
The Crimson Tide have a bye week, and Young will have a week to rest his shoulder before a closing stretch that includes back-to-back trips to No. 18 LSU and No. 15 Ole Miss. He averaged 273 passing yards with four TDs and one interception in the victories against those teams last season. Young still is in the mix, and the duel with a resurgent Jayden Daniels at Tiger Stadium is worth looking forward to in Week 10.
2022 stats: 1,809 passing yards, 71.5%, 17 TDs, 3 INTs
Who knew Nix would be among the potential finalists after No. 1 Georgia put a 49-3 beatdown on the Ducks in Week 1. Put your hands down. In games against ranked BYU and UCLA teams, Nix was 35 of 43 (81.4%) with seven TDs and no interceptions. If Oregon wins out and wins the Pac-12, then Nix has a great shot to be a Heisman finalist. Will that high-level focus stick at Cal this weekend?
The Heisman Trophy will be awarded on Dec. 10, one week after the conference championship games. The ceremony will be televised at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
