Noel Whelan has claimed some Arsenal stars could “play through the pain barrier” amid a new wave of injuries in the build-up to their derby clash with Tottenham on Saturday (1 October).
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Mikel Arteta needs the “experience” of his top stars in a “crucial” match against their rivals.
According to (30 September), Thomas Partey, Martin Odegaard, Kieran Tierney, and Takehiro Tomiyasu are among the Arsenal players carrying injuries ahead of Saturday’s (1 October) showdown.
Cedric Soares, Emile Smith Rowe and Mohamed Elneny are among the more long-term absentees.
Arsenal were also stretched thin in their last Premier League game – with Arteta handing 15-year-old Ethan Nwaneri a record-breaking debut as a result.
The Gunners sit top of the table after seven games with Man City and Tottenham in hot pursuit.

Whelan insisted no player will want to miss out on the derby if it isn’t “damaging” to their long-term fitness.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’ll have assessed the players coming back into training.
“They may just be little niggles. I don’t think any player is going to want to miss out.
“If these players can play through the pain barrier, I think they will do.
“We’ve seen young players like Nwaneri come into the side, and he’ll be full of confidence – so there’s options.
“But I think he needs the strength in depth. If it’s not going to be too damaging to have these players in the side, I really believe that he’ll want that experience.
“If they can get through 90 minutes, he’ll make sure they do. It’s a crucial game, and Spurs are up there as well.”
