You are listening to the Expresso Sports Update. Here is the latest news from the world of Indian and International Sports brought to you by The Indian Express.
“Let’s begin this bulletin with some news from the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia.
Afghanistan’s hard-hitting opening batsman Hazratullah Zazai will miss the remainder of the Twenty20 World Cup due to an abdominal muscle strain, tournament organizers said on Monday, October 31.
Zazai will be replaced by travelling reserve Gulbadin Naib in Afghanistan’s 15-player squad for the tournament in Australia. Afghanistan is bottom of Group One with two points from three matches in the Super 12 stage. They lost to England and their games against New Zealand and Ireland were abandoned due to rain. Afghanistan needs to beat Sri Lanka later today and Australia on Friday, November 4, to have any chance of qualifying for the semi-finals.”
“After suffering a loss against South Africa, Rohit Sharma’s Men will look to bounce back against Bangladesh in Adelaide on Wednesday, November 2. However, Rahul Dravid and his support staff will have some tough decisions to make ahead of the match, concerning KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik.
Rahul has had a dry tournament, with scores of 4, 9 and 9 so far. He’s been highly tentative in the middle, and the manner of his dismissals has made former India captain Sunil Gavaskar raise questions about his footwork and frame of mind.
Meanwhile, Karthik, making a comeback to the Indian team after a while out on the sidelines, picked up an injury against South Africa, but he has not impressed with the bat either.

“Former Australia all-rounder Simon O’Donnell dropped a bombshell when he revealed that there were discussions about an India vs Pakistan Test series which could be played in Australia.
Speaking to SEN Radio, O’Donnell was discussing how much he enjoyed the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan on October 23 and said, “It was magnificent sort of stuff, to the level that I can say there will be discussions being had, or discussions are being had to play a Test match here. My word conversations are happening, in the wake of this T20 World Cup clash. There are already discussions taking place”
O’Donnell also said that there was a possibility of a triangular series between Australia, India, and Pakistan happening”
“Moving on to some football news.
World Cup-winning captain Cafu is set to visit football-mad Kolkata in the build-up to the FIFA World Cup, the Brazilian great said in a video message on Monday, October 31.
The two-time World Cup winner said in a video message, “Here is Captain Cafu see you see in India in November, Kolkata is a very special place and I have heard that the people of Bengal have huge Brazilian fan following,”
The 52-year-old will inaugurate the Kolkata Police Friendship Cup and play a charity match. Cafu will also be having a football workshop with budding young talents in the city, the organisers announced.
Cafu won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994 and 2002.”
“Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola revealed forward Erling Haaland will skip their Champions League clash with Sevilla on Wednesday, November 2 as a precaution after the Norwegian did not play in last weekend’s 1-0 Premier League victory at Leicester City due to injury,
Haaland, who has 22 goals in all competitions this season, was substituted in the second half of City’s goalless Champions League draw at his former side Borussia Dortmund last Tuesday, October 25, after sustaining a knock.
Guardiola said he would not take a risk with his leading goalscorer when they host Sevilla in Europe’s top-tier club competition as they have already qualified for the knockout stage.
Haaland joined City from German side Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth around 54 million pounds. “
“Meanwhile, in some badminton news, the Badminton Association of India has announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh each for Sankar Muthusamy and the men’s doubles pair of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty for their commendable performances at the World Junior Championships and French Open respectively.
Former junior world number 1, Sankar on Sunday, October 30, became only the second Indian male shuttler to claim a silver medal at the World Junior Championships after going down in the summit clash against Chinese Taipei’s Kuo kuan Lin in Spain.
Satwik and Chirag, on the other hand, claimed the French Open Super 750 crown with a straight-game win over Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han in the finals in Paris.”
“Lastly, in some tennis news,
The Davis Cup will become a part of the ATP Tour calendar from next year under a groundbreaking deal signed on Monday between the governing body of men’s tennis, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and tournament promoters Kosmos.
The move comes after the ATP Cup, a joint venture between Tennis Australia and the ATP was put to bed last week with the announcement of a mixed-sex $15 million event featuring teams from 18 nations to kick off the 2023 season.
That new tournament reflects the growing cooperation between the men’s and women’s tours and the ITF which have moved towards streamlining the governance of the game since the COVID crisis disrupted the 2020 season.”
