“Let’s begin the bulletin with news from the T20 World Cup.
Ireland stunned England at the T20 World Cup as rain forced an early finish with the English five runs behind the par score.
Andrew Balbirnie top scored for the Irish with a well-struck 62, while Lorcan Tucker ably supported him. Moeen Ali looked to have England in with a chance, scoring 24 off 12, before rain interrupted play”
“England skipper Jos Buttler conceded that his side erred in the loss against Ireland, leaving the former champions under pressure to make the semifinals of the T20 World Cup.
England lost by five runs to Ireland via the Duckworth Lewis method in a rain-affected match.
The captain said, “I thought we were poor in the first 10 overs and let them get away. We were not consistent enough and let them score on both sides of the wicket. The second ten overs were much better. Ireland was excellent, they outplayed us. We know we have made a mistake here and have put more pressure on us, but certainly, if you needed a game to get going then England-Australia is one of those,””
“New Zealand’s Super 12 match against Afghanistan at the T20 World Cup was abandoned on Wednesday, October 26, without a ball bowled due to rain, leaving both teams to share the points.
The no-result at the Melbourne Cricket Ground left New Zealand top of Group 1 on three points, the Black Caps having beaten champions and hosts Australia in their Super 12 opener last Saturday. October 22.
Afghanistan, who lost to England in their first match, remain bottom of the group with one point.”
“Star India batter Virat Kohli stormed his way back into the top 10 T20I batting chart, climbing up five spots to the ninth position in the latest rankings issued on Wednesday, October 26
Kohli has been rewarded for his heroics against Pakistan in India’s T20 World Cup opener against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last Sunday. Kohli smashed an unbeaten 82 to guide India to a memorable last-ball victory, the knock catapulting the former India captain into the top 10 of the T20I batters list.
The 33-year-old hit six fours and four sixes during his glorious innings. Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan continues to occupy the top spot, with New Zealand opener Devon Conway rising three places to replace Suryakumar Yadav in 2nd place.”
“In some football news, Barcelona were eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League for the second consecutive season on Wednesday, October 26, even before a 3-0 loss at home against Bayern Munich
Barcelona needed Inter to drop points, so it began its match at Camp Nou already out of contention as Bayern and Inter secured the top two places in Group C. Barcelona will finish third and earn a Europa League berth. Bayern had already advanced and will be the group winner.
Sadio Mané scored in the 10th minute, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting added to the lead in the 31st and Benjamin Pavard closed the scoring deep into stoppage time to give Bayern its fifth win in five group matches.”
“Manchester United defender Raphael Varane won’t play for the club before the World Cup after sustaining a hamstring injury but still has a chance of playing in Qatar, according to United manager Erik ten Hag.
The France international was in tears after breaking down in United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday as he feared his World Cup chances were over. Ten Hag confirmed Wednesday that the centre-back will not play for United before the tournament but provided hope he could still feature for the defending champion at the World Cup, which starts Nov. 20.
Ten Hag said, “He is out certainly until the World Cup and will not play in this block for Manchester United,””
“Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said they must improve their defending at set pieces after conceding twice at corner kicks in their 3-2 Champions League defeat by RB Leipzig on Tuesday, October 25.
Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku put Leipzig 2-0 up after 18 minutes in Germany after Madrid failed to deal with corners, as the Spaniards suffered their first defeat of the season.
A visibly irritated Ancelotti said, “We weren’t paying attention to the ball and then we conceded two goals, which we’re usually much more convincing at doing. I haven’t seen a lack of intensity or attitude. Sooner or later a defeat had to come, I’ve said it before. It is a defeat that hurts because we still have another chance to finish first.””
“Lastly, in some badminton news,
Kidambi Srikanth prevailed over Lakshya Sen in an all-Indian duel to advance to the men’s singles second round of the French Open Super 750 badminton tournament here on Wednesday.
Sameer Verma, meanwhile, registered an upset win over Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia to also make it to the second round.
Srikanth, the 2021 World Championships silver winner, beat junior compatriot Sen 21-18 21-18 in a first-round match that lasted 46 minutes.
This was only the second career match between the top two Indian shuttlers. Sen had lost to his senior compatriot in their earlier meeting at the semifinals of the 2021 World Championships to settle for a bronze medal.”
