You are listening to the Expresso Sports Update. Here is the latest news from the world of Indian and International Sports brought to you by The Indian Express.
“Let’s begin with news from the T20 World Cup.
When Marcus Stoinis walked in to bat, Australia needed 69 from 46 balls. Glenn Maxwell had helped Australia break free after a slow start to reach 85 for 2 in 10 overs, but Sri Lanka gave just 4 runs in the next 14 deliveries
Stoinis found a good way to shed the nerves: 6 sixes and 4 fours in an 18-ball 59, as Australia reached their target with 21 balls to spare to retrieve some of the damage inflicted by New Zealand in their opener. It was the fastest T20I fifty by an Australian, and the second-quickest in the history of the World Cup. Five of the maximums came against the spin of Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga.”
“After Virat Kohli’s 82, the second player everyone is talking about is allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin who scored the winning runs against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup on Sunday, October 23, and handed India a famous win.
On his Youtube Channel, he spoke about the game and how the conditions were at the MCG. He said, “”It was extremely cold for a cricket match. Even while playing, our hands got extremely numb. As a spinner, I felt it extremely difficult to grip the ball. It took time to settle into a rhythm in that cold weather. The ball was moving a bit early on but still with the batting strength we had, I thought we would chase down the target of 160 easily.”””
“Former captain Anil Kumble feels young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has the potential to do “wonderful things for India”, and even compared him to Zaheer Khan.
Having made his India debut earlier this year, the 23-year-old has already produced some impactful performances, including a three-wicket haul against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup on Sunday, October 23
Kumble, who witnessed Arshdeep’s growth from close quarters as Punjab Kings’ head coach, is hugely impressed with the lanky pacer.
He said, “”Arshdeep has certainly matured and I’d like to see him carry on. Probably what Zaheer Khan did for India. I worked with him for three years and I could see the kind of development that he has had in the T20 format,”””
“Meanwhile, in some football news, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez (Chaavi) said, the team will be eager to show everyone that they are better than rivals Bayern Munich when the two teams face off in the Champions League on October 26. 2022,
Barcelona were beaten 2-0 by Bayern in last month’s Group C fixture, a result that Xavi said was not a true reflection of the team’s talent.
But having won only one of their four matches in Europe this season, Xavi wants his team to show their true worth.
In a press conference, Xavi said, “We have to show ourselves that even if we are knocked out of the Champions League we are a good team and we can compete against the best teams out there,””
“The Champions League clash between Benfica and Juventus on Tuesday, October 25, was played without goal-line technology due to works at the Portuguese club’s stadium, UEFA has said.
Benfica commissioned works at the Estadio da Luz “without the knowledge of UEFA and UEFA’s goal-line technology supplier”, which made the goal-line technology system dysfunctional.
The works included replacement of the giant screens, installation of LED lighting and a new sound system, Benfica said on their website.
The UEFA, European football’s governing body said in a statement before the match, “Unfortunately it will not be possible to replace and install a new system in time for the match and therefore the match will go ahead without the use of goal-line technology as per the UEFA Champions League regulations,””
“Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta said the number of games being crammed into the schedule ahead of the World Cup next month is “crazy” and that player welfare is being jeopardised.
Azpilicueta’s team mate N’Golo Kante has been ruled out of the World Cup after undergoing an operation on a hamstring injury, while Reece James is in a race to be fit after injuring his knee.
Chelsea have six games to play in all competitions before the World Cup begins on Nov. 20.
Talking to reporters, The right-back said, “It’s difficult and it’s sad because as players you want to go to the World Cup, but we have this schedule where we have to play for our club and do our best,””
“Lastly, in some badminton news,
Double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu and Thomas Cup winner HS Prannoy gained a spot each to reach the 5th and 12th positions in women’s and men’s singles world rankings released on October 25, 2022.
Sindhu, who has not played any tournament since winning gold in the Commonwealth Games in August due to an ankle injury, possesses 87218 points from 26 tournaments.
After three years, Sindhu, a former world no. 2, has regained her place in the top 5. After recovering from the injury, the former world champion from Hyderabad resumed her training on October 24.
In the men’s singles, Prannoy continued his ascendency after a pre-quarterfinal finish at the Denmark Open Super 750.”
