Paul Robinson has claimed Dominic Calvert-Lewin will not “walk back into” the Everton starting XI upon his return from injury.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one suggested Neil Maupay is performing well enough to retain his place in Frank Lampard’s side.
Calvert-Lewin is yet to feature in the 2022-23 campaign because of a knee injury suffered in pre-season.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (4 September), Lampard revealed the striker has returned to full training ahead of the visit of West Ham on Sunday.
Summer signing Neil Maupay led the line for the Blues in the Merseyside derby on 3 September.
When asked by Football Insider if Maupay would be axed from the starting XI as soon as Calvert-Lewin is fit to start, Robinson said: “Maupay has come in and had an impact.

“He gives them an edge. There is competition for places now.
“Calvert-Lewin is to Everton what Patrick Bamford is to Leeds United. The difference is Everton now have another option in Maupay.
“Calvert-Lewin is no longer an automatic starter. When he gets his chance he has to come in and score goals. I don’t think he will just walk back into the starting lineup.”
Calvert-Lewin has been plagued by injury over the past 18 months.
The England international contributed five goals and two assists in 17 Premier League appearances in the 2021-22 campaign.
