Chennai News Live Updates Today: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has launched raids at places belonging to former Tamil Nadu minister C Vijayabaskar and SP Velumani. The raids were conducted against Velumani on allegations of abusing his position and granting tenders to his close associates from 2015 to 2018 and causing loss to the government up to Rs 500 crores.
In other news, the Madras High Court on Monday directed the Tamil Nadu government to restore the Buckingham canal, running through the city for centuries and now polluted and narrowed down due to encroachments, back to its glory in six months. The first bench of Chief Justice M N Bhandari and Justice N Mala gave the direction while passing orders on a PIL petition from Kasturba and Indira Nagar Residents Welfare Forum, on Monday.

The officials of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) of the Tamil Nadu government are carrying out searches at the residences, offices and several areas belonging to former AIADMK ministers SP Velumani and C Vijayabaskar Tuesday.
The DVAC sleuths Monday registered a criminal case against former Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani for his alleged involvement in allocation of tenders injudiciously to his close associated companies. According to the statement issued by the authorities, Velumani abused his official position causing a loss to the exchequer of Rs 500 crore in replacing the existing street lights with LED lights in rural areas during 2015-18. Tamil Nadu reported 426 Coronavirus positive cases on Monday taking the total infections in the State to 35,74,093 till date.
There has however been no fatality today and as a result, the toll continues to remain 38,038.
The active cases as on today declined to 4,839 from 4,866 on Sunday, according to a bulletin from the State health department.
About 453 COVID-19 positive patients were discharged following treatment today, thus taking the cumulative recoveries to 35,31,216 so far.
Among the districts, Chennai recorded the maximum infections of 84 followed by Coimbatore: 52 and Chengalpattu: 35. PTI

The Madras High Court was informed recently that guidelines fixing a time limit for keeping a government servant under suspension have been issued.
A submission to this effect was made by the the state-run Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANEGDCO), when two of its employees aggrieved over their suspension for a long time, approached the High Court challenging the same. (PTI)

Five bikers were arrested for allegedly performing dangerous stunts on the road in front of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai on Thursday night.
In a 30-second clip taken by a passerby, youths were seen performing stunts on costly motorcycles on Anna Salai and heading to the Anna bridge from Teynampet. A 52-year-old farmer and activist who had been demanding the closure of illegal stone quarries was allegedly murdered by a quarry owner in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district over the weekend, his family has claimed.

A 46-year old man, allegedly involved in selling banned lotteries, has been arrested, police here said on Sunday. The lottery tickets were seized from him so was cash totalling Rs 25,400, the police said. Similarly, another person was held for the same offence and tickets were confiscated from him in the district, they said. The two were remanded in judicial custody, the police added. PTI

Tamil Nadu on Sunday inoculated 12,62,089 people against Covid-19 in the 36th mega vaccination held across the State, the Health Department has said. A total of .61,202 people received the first dose, 2,98,634 the second dose, while 9,02,253 people received the precautionary booster dose, a press release said here. The total number of people who were vaccinated (above the age of 18 years) with the first dose comprises 96.49 per cent and the second 91.09 per cent.
New Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu stood at 431, including a returnee from Uttar Pradesh, pushing the overall caseload to 35,73,667, said the Health Department on Sunday, reported PTI. There were no fresh fatalities and the death toll remained unchanged at 38,038, a bulletin said here. As many as 461 people recuperated from the virus in the last 24 hours aggregating to 35,30,763 leaving 4,866 active cases. Chennai has in the last few days seen cases marginally increasing. It rose to 86 today as against 85 on Saturday. On Friday, there were 87 cases while on Thursday, it was 85. Coimbatore reported 54 while the rest were spread across other districts.

In other updates, the revised power tariff of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd (TANGEDCO) came into effect on Saturday despite opposition by various political parties.
The new tariff, approved by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC), however, retained the existing scheme of providing 100 units free to domestic, multi-tenements, old age homes and handlooms consumers.
The domestic consumers will have to pay Rs 4.50 per unit consumed, as against Rs 3 per unit up to 500 units, up to 400 units for two months and Rs 6.50 per unit from 401 to 500 units, and Rs 8 per unit for 501 to 600 units.
The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu police not to harass persons summoned for enquiry at police stations.
Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan gave the direction while disposing of a criminal original petition from S Prakash and three others from Tiruppur, on September 8.
The judge also issued a set of guidelines to be strictly adhered to by the cops while summoning any person to the police station. The judge said that while summoning any person named in the complaint or any witness to the incident complained of, the police officer shall summon such person/s through a written summon under Sec.160 of the Criminal Procedure Code, specifying a particular date and time for appearance.
