By Alex McLeish
Callum Wilson will already be embracing a new role at Newcastle United after reportedly signing a new deal.
That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about a possible new role for the striker.
On Monday (3 October), David Ornstein of The Athletic reported Wilson has signed a new two-year deal at Newcastle with the option of a further extension.

The club are yet to confirm the deal.
The 30-year-old remains a key player for the Magpies and has scored three goals in four Premier League outings this season.
McLeish is not surprised to see Wilson extending his stay with the club.

“Wilson has been a thorn in the side of many Premier League defenders over the years,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“He has had a couple of injuries recently and that has been a blow for Newcastle but when you see that guy on the pitch, the goalscoring opportunites he gets himseflf into, you know you have a top player there.
“I was going to say it’s a coup for Newcastle. But the coup was the new owners coming in and backing Eddie Howe and giving the club the money to make deals like this and push the team higher up the table.
“They can now keep a player who has been Mr consistent for them in terms of his goal return. Teaching those younger players will come in time, although I bet he is already doing some of that.”
Wilson has already missed four games through injury this season after missing 19 top-flight games with a hamstring complaint last term.
He is expected to start against Brentford on Saturday (8 October).
