Steven Gerrard should not be sacked by Aston Villa despite an underwhelming start to the season.
That’s according to former Villains boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Gerrard’s future.
Sources told Football Insider on Thursday (13 October) that Aston Villa’s owners are weighing up whether to sack Gerrard over the coming weeks after being increasingly concerned by the team’s results and performances.
Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens are unimpressed by the lack of progress on the pitch despite the heavy investment in the squad.
However, McLeish doesn’t think Gerrard should be, or will be, sacked.
“Gerrard has been very positive in terms of getting forwards on the pitch,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“Sometimes that doesn’t work because they can get in the way of each other. It’s not for a lack of trying to be positive.
“The performance level of the team just seems not to be joining the dots at the moment. That game on Monday, Nottingham Forest are a different kettle of fish, they have struggled this season.
“The amount of players in their squad, maybe it has left them a little bit confused about who to choose. I think the players at Villa aren’t performing.
“There are a lot of quality players on the pitch but they aren’t at the levels we have seen. Is that Gerrard’s fault? We just don’t know.
“I don’t see him [Gerrard] being in trouble this season even though the fans want the team to be punching around about the top-six.
“You have to say he has been so unlucky this season.”
Villa face Chelsea on Sunday (16 October).
They currently sit 16th in the league,
