Ange Postecoglou admits his Celtic side could have been more ruthless in front of goal against Motherwell – as he questioned Callum McGregor's late red card.
The captain was shown a straight red after hauling down last man Louis Moult with just a few minutes remaining as Celts led 2-1 at Parkhead. It was a professional foul and as strong a case of taking one for the team as can be. It didn't matter too much, in the end, as the Hoops saw out the game to win all three points but Postecoglou suggested there may have been a covering defender for his side and that ref John Beaton should perhaps have flashed a yellow instead. "From my angle I thought we had a covering player but the referee's made that decision so you've just got to (accept) it," the Australian told BBC Sportsound at full-time.
Celtic's Josip Juranovic chested in a bizarre own goal to hand the Steelmen a lifeline and Postecoglou was disappointed with the defensive mix-up.
He did, however, absolve the Croatian and goalkeeper Joe Hart by claiming his team should have been out in front by then.
"It was one of those things of miscommunication," he said of the goal. "First-half they didn't threaten us and we had some good chances, you give them a goal it keeps them in the game and gives them encouragement.
"We handled them not too bad but like I said we lacked a little bit of that cutting edge we've had and kept them in the game.
"It's not a significant (win) but it's important, especially when you've lost your previous game you don't want to get into that rut where you make things difficult for yourself.
"We created enough chances to win more comfortably than we did, there were a couple of self-inflicted wounds that made it closer than it should've been.
"We hit the post twice but we could've been more efficient and ruthless in the final third. We had some chances we usually take and we didn't today which made it more difficult than it should've been."
RB Leipzig are next in the Champions League group stage and Celtic may have the injured Giorgos Giakoumakis back in time. USA defender Cameron Carter-Vickers, though, may still be out as Postecoglou hinted.
"Any players coming back for Leipzig? We'll see. Hopefully Giakoumakis should be okay. The reports I've had so far, and Cameron Carter-Vickers we'll just sort of see day to day proposition."
