NEW ULM — New Ulm’s new fixed-route city bus service, the Hermann Express, is scheduled to open “softly” on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Bus service for anyone will operate from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4 at City Hall.
Eventually, service is planned to operate from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and, beginning in November, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Brown County Human Services Director Barb Dietz told the Brown County Board on Tuesday that plans are underway to hire a second city route driver.
The bus route will start at the Heartland Express office at the Brown County License Bureau and stop at marked bus stops. The loop will take about an hour to complete and will allow riders to access stores and community sites in town.
The bus may go off-route a block or two to drop off passengers on request. Rides will be free until Jan. 1, 2023, when $1 fares are set to begin.
Heartland Express will continue its demand-response service in addition to operating fixed-route service. Watch for service updates at NewUlmMn.gov.
