When LSU and Auburn get together to play football, the world seemingly stands still to watch. The Tiger Bowl never ceases to entertain, and anything can happen when these two programs collide. This is especially true when the scene is Jordan-Hare Stadium at night. However, the ruckus environment quickly went silent when Sevyn Banks was injured on the opening kickoff.
Players for both teams immediately called for trainers to come to Banks’ aid following the play being whistled dead. Banks’ head collided with the thigh/side of the navy and orange Tigers’ return man and the LSU special teams player fell motionless to the ground. It was a truly tragic scene at Pat Dye Field early on for everyone involved. The Bayou Bengals’ defensive back was carted off the field on a stretcher moments later.
Obviously, nobody wants to assume anything in these scary situations. ESPN’s crew on the call, Joe Tessitore, Greg McElroy and Katie George, did an excellent job of reporting the facts with professionalism and keeping fans updated.
Thankfully, they delivered some amazing news on the Bayou Bengals player’s immediate status midway through the first quarter:
Then ESPN broadcast with positive news.
Update says #LSU spokesman confirmed Sevyn Banks has movement in his extremities. Scary situation after he was carted off and taken to the hospital for further evaluations.

Banks was also alert and speaking to the medical team as he was being carted off the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He was transported to East Alabama Medical Center in nearby Opelika immediately after being taken off on a stretcher, as well. Thankfully, he now has movement in all of his extremities, which rules out the worst-case scenario in this situation.

It goes without saying this is the best-case scenario. We will wait to hear more from official sources before reporting any more on Banks’ status at this point in time. Hopefully, there will be more good news throughout the evening.
Prayers from around the college football world go out to Banks and his loved ones as he hopefully begins the road to recovery from this scary injury. Any and all updates on the defensive back’s status going forward will be shared with fans via Death Valley Voice’s Twitter page.
