Roger Federer, dogged by a knee injury, has not played since the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals and last week announced his retirement at the age of 41. He will play his final game as a professional this evening at the O2 Arena in London, a doubles match alongside long-time friend and rival Rafael Nadal. The Swiss great has enjoyed a storied rivalry with the Spaniard for over two decades and together they have won 42 Grand Slam singles titles in a golden era for the men’s game.

Everything was the last time. And funny enough, with all the matches and having the guys being here – fans, family, friends – I didn’t feel the stress so much, even though I did think [an injury might happen] in the match.
I feel great, but to be saying goodbye as a team – I always felt I was a team player at the heart – but singles don’t really do that a whole lot.
