ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh on Monday provided injury updates for Donovan Edwards, Cade McNamaraTrevor Keegan and Karsen Barnhart as Michigan prepares for its Big Ten opener against Maryland.
Speaking on the “Inside Michigan Football” radio show, here’s what Harbaugh said:
Donovan Edwards suffered an apparent leg injury in the Week 2 victory over Hawaii and didn’t play last Saturday against UConn. Harbaugh has been relatively quiet on the specifics of the running back’s ailment and his recovery timeline, and that continued during the radio show.
“Good, he’s just doing him, and that’s what I always tell Donovan Edwards: ‘You just do you, Donovan,’” Harbaugh said. “He’s working hard at it. I mean, no loss of the tremendous energy that he brings. I was in the training room at 8:00 a.m. and he was bouncing around doing his thing.
“He’s looking for all the opportunity he can and, he’s doing good.”
With Edwards out, CJ Stokes and Isaiah Gash earned more carries in the blowout over the Huskies.
QB Cade McNamara suffered a leg injury near the end of the first half of Michigan’s win over UConn.
On Monday night, Harbaugh said he still doesn’t know the timetable for the captain’s return.
“I don’t know,” Harbaugh said. “We’ll see. I mean, I’m sure he’ll be a fast healer. Tough as nails type of guy. He’ll gonna be rehabbing for a little while here. Some rest and treatment.”
Harbaugh said Monday that he’d be comfortable with either of Alan Bowman, Davis Warren or Alex Orji as the backup to J.J. McCarthy while McNamara is out. All three played against UConn.
The left guard missed much of the UConn game with an injury, though it appeared he could have played more if needed.
“Probable,” Harbaugh said when asked about Keegan’s status for Saturday. “I think he will be.”
Reserve offensive lineman Karsen Barnhart sprained his ankle in the opener against Colorado State and has been questionable since. It appears his status is still in doubt for the Big Ten opener.
“I think it’s good,” Harbaugh said when asked about the offensive line depth. “It’ll be better when Karsen Barnhart is back and healthy. We’ll see if that’s this week or the next.”
