Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan, Super 4, Highlights: Sri Lanka beat Afghanistan by four wickets in their Super 4 match of the Asia Cup here on Saturday. Sri Lanka chased down the target of 176 with five balls to spare with useful contributions from Kushal Mendis (36), Pathum Nissanka (35), Danushka Gunathilaka (33) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (31).
For Afghanistan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Naveen-ul-Haq took two wickets apiece. Earlier, put in to bat, Afghanistan scored 175 for 6 with opener and wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scoring with a 45-ball 84 while Ibrahim Zadran contributed 40. For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madushanka took two wickets while Maheesh Theekshana and Asitha Fernando got one each.

Dasun Shanaka: “As a team we believe we can chase anything on these kind of wickets. When chasing, we have a clear idea of how the wicket behaves. Boys executed the plan very well – Fernando, Hasaranga, Theekshana. Very pleased to see how Mendis and Pathum got started.”
Mohammad Nabi: “We were 20-25 runs short at the end and didn’t field very well. We also didn’t bowl in the right areas. We didn’t bowl brilliantly, dropped some catches. Situation could have been different if we did. When we played last game against Bangladesh, today the pitch was better (compared to that).”
Bhanuka Rajapaksa: ‘In the IPL I have batted at number 3, and coming back to Sri Lanka’s squad, they wanted me to bat at number 3 initially, but in order to strengthen the middle-order they wanted me to bat at number 5, or number 6. I am enjoying at the moment.’
‘It was a bit of a redemption, because in the last game they managed to get us all out for 105, so we wanted to raise our hands up and show the entire world that we are not as bad we were the other night.’
Afghanistan will think of that lean patch near the 10 over mark where they weren’t able to score a boundary for 22 deliveries. Or maybe the fact that this was Rashid Khan’s most expensive outing in UAE, ever. Or maybe just take it with a pinch of salt. Sri Lanka found all the inspiration they needed with that 57/0 powerplay, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa took it upon himself to take Sri Lanka inches away closer to the finish line. A good turnaround this for the 2014 Asia Cup and T20 champions to better their case for the final next Sunday. Afghanistan will now need to get the better of India and Pakistan to have a shot at that final in Dubai.

Karunaratne hits Farooqi’s full toss over mid off for four and that is that. Sri Lanka have beaten Afghanistan by four wickets and won this first Super 4 fixture at Sharjah. Highest total chased in T20Is at this venue, highest T20I chase against Afghanistan.
31 off 14, dream T20 innings that from Bhanuka Rajapaksa but he is unable to take the asterisk with him as Naveen-ul-Haq gets him wuth a slower one. Sri Lanka still need two to win off 9 balls.
WICKET! Big wicket right at the death.
Twist in the tale, perhaps?
Rajapaksa b Naveen – 31 (14)

Bhanuka Rajapaksa has smashed Naveen-ul-Haq’s first delivery for a four and now Sri Lanka only need four to win off 11 balls.
Wanindu Hasaranga slices an overpitched delivery from Farooqi for a four past backward point. Goes after him again on a short delivery and his edge finds the boundary at third man. Sri Lanka have taken control of this game now. 10 needed off the last 15 balls.
Gunathilaka reverse sweeps Rashid for four. The two have an altercation in the middle of the 22 yards. Three deliveries later, Rashid Khan has the final laugh as he gets the left-hander trying to go for a sweep shot. His first wicket of the day. However, Sri Lanka get another boundary before the over ends. Not been the ideal T20 outing for Rashid Khan, who finishes his spel, of four overs at 1/39.

Before this Asia Cup began, Bhanuka Rajapaksa had said that he’d want to bring the same version of himself to this tournament that featured in IPL 2022, striking at a rate above 150. He clearly was that version of himself in that last over. Two fours followed by a six, 18 off those six deliveries. Sri Lanka are 145/4 after 16 overs.

Dasun Shanaka going after Mujeeb Ur Rahman on the first ball of the 15th over, finds the fielder at long on. Najib somehow, inhuman as he looks while doing so, is able to squeeze his body behind the boundary rope while he catches it off the initial attempt and on the second, when he throws it back in the air only to go on the other side of the boundary and come back in to complete an outstandingly clean catch of the Sri Lanka captain. The score is 119/4 after 14.1 overs.

Coming on the back of that five run over, Rashid Khan, it seemed, had wrapped the Sri Lanka captain around his pads on the first ball of his third over. The umpire raised his fingers as well. But upon review it is clear, the impact is outside off. Decision reversed and Shanaka sweeps it behind square for a four off the next delivery. The disbelief, oh the disbelief for Rashid & co. as they watch the review on the big screen. Sri Lanka 108/3 after 13 overs.

What a sight this!
The bails are lighted up by the impact of the ball on the stumps, and yet to land on the pitch. Charith Asalanka went for a sweep off a ball coming in and paid the price for it. The price for it. Sri Lanka lose a third. Hundred comes up in the over. 101/3 after 12 overs.

No party yet for Rashid Khan in the match but that was a much better over than the first he bowled today. Went for 17 including two maximums from Kusal Mendis but only concedes five in his second. 11 overs gone now, Sri Lanka are 87/2.
Pathum Nissanka had just smashed Mujeeb Ur Rahman for a maximum over deep midwicket. But the 21-year-old finds a way back with a wicket in the same over. Nissanka edges the final ball and is caught behind by Gurbaz. After nine overs, the score is 80/2.

Naveen-ul-Haq finally gets that first wicket for Afghanistan!
Kusal Mendis, looking to clear the boundary rope as he had thrice so far in his innings, finds the fielder at deep mid-wicket. Sri Lanka 64/1 after 7 overs.
WICKET! Afghanistan have been looking for this.

Good start for Sri Lanka. The gears will have to be shifted even further sometime in the chase but for now, they have managed to frustrate the spin duo of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the powerplay. Those back to back sixes for Kusal Mendis off Rashid might as well be weighed in gold. After six overs, the score is 57/0.
Sri Lanka have been calculative in their risk taking so far but have found ways of getting the odd boundary or two in an over. Kusal Mendis catches Naveen-ul-Haq’s length and finds a boundary at short fine. Not the easiest looking shots that, ain’t it? After five overs, Sri Lanka are 40/0.

Kusal Mendis goes after Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Gets down on his knee and sweeps it clean for a six over deep midwicket. After four overs, Sri Lanka are 31/0.
