Justin Herbert injury update: Chargers QB suffered possible rib injury vs. Chiefs, Brandon Staley says – Sporting News

  • September 16, 2022

Justin Herbert finished the game, but it wasn’t without a fair bit of pain.
In the fourth quarter of the “Thursday Night Football” matchup between the Chiefs and Chargers, Herbert was hit hard by defensive end Mike Danna, and the hit left the Chargers QB in a lot of pain.
Herbert would exit the game for a play and re-enter, but he was clearly in distress: Amazon cameras caught Herbert pointing to his left side, and he would have apparent issues throwing the ball, as well.

The Chargers passer was hit a lot during the game, though he was sacked just twice. He was hit four times by the Chiefs defense, some of which clearly left their mark.
Herbert did finish out the game, though he was more than a bit off target in the closing stages of the game; He did, though, bring the Chargers to within a score with just 71 seconds remaining.
Here’s the latest on Herbert’s injury:

Friday morning, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Herbert underwent X-rays following the game and they appeared to be negative, but there was no definitive word as to whether there was any other injury to his ribs, rib cage or rib cartilage.
Rapoport said Herbert would be undergoing more tests Friday.

LA coach Brandon Staley said after the game Herbert was “OK,” but the team would know more about Herbert’s status on Friday.
Staley would provide that status update Friday afternoon: He told reporters, as tweeted by Rapoport, that Herbert suffered a cartilage fracture in the rib. This is considered a better outcome than a fracture of the rib itself.
LA’s star QB is day to day. Staley said Herbert could take part in practice ahead of the Chargers’ Week 3 game against the Jaguars at home.
#Chargers coach Brandon Staley says QB Justin Herbert was diagnosed with a rib cartilage fracture and that he could be back at practice next week. Staley alluded to this being better than a broken bone.
The “Thursday Night Football” broadcast reported that Herbert underwent X-rays following the game, which was confirmed by The Athletic:
Justin Herbert just went into the X-ray room.
Staley said postgame that Herbert is dealing with an issue that may be related to his abdomen or ribs:
Brandon Staley said Justin Herbert is “OK” and doesn’t expect his injury to be an issue going forward. Said he’s dealing with something in his abdomen, possibly ribs.
Brandon Staley says Justin Herbert “is ok. It was a tough game. You’re not going to see a quarterback in any level of football play tougher…there’s nobody that can do what he can do.”
Staley says they’ll learn a lot more on Herbert’s physical status tomorrow.

“You’re not going to see any quarterback in any level of football play tougher and do more for their team,” Staley said, “and will their team— there’s nobody who can do what he can do. Nobody. He showed a lot of guts…he brought us back and gave us a chance.”

“That’s just the mindset and the toughness that he has, to be going through whatever he was going through,” Mike Williams said postgame. “And to stand in there and make plays— that’s the quarterback that’s leading us.”
Herbert was clearly hobbled by the hit, and looked to be in pain on the sideline. Herbert was clearly favoring his left side and pointing to his left side while on the sideline.
He lay on the turf and exited the game for a single play, then re-entered and helped lead the Chargers on a scoring drive.
This story has been updated with the diagnosis of Herbert’s injury and his possible availability for Week 3.
