This time next week, Premier League teams will be scrambling to put the final touches on their squads on transfer deadline day. With just seven days left, the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea are still hard at work looking to pull off ambitious deals, with both incomings and outgoings on the agenda.
Manchester United transfer chief John Murtough’s next few days is likely to centre around striking a deal for Ajax forward Antony. Erik ten Hag is desperate to reunite with the Brazilian, with whom he worked in Amsterdam last season, but the Dutch giants will only play ball if their huge asking price is met.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s future could also shape the Red Devils’ season with the Portuguese yet to find a new club after reportedly asking to leave last month. A host of top sides have distanced themselves from Ronaldo and he can add another to the list as of today.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are focused on a signing a new defender and a new striker before September 1 as co-owner Todd Boehly explores a number of possibilities.

Wolves remain in contact with Vfb Stuttgart over the signing of striker Sasa Kalajdzic.

Manchester United have failed with a surprise approach for Bayern Munich right-back Benjamin Pavard, according to L’Equipe.
Despite initially being open for an exit this summer, Pavard decided to remain in Bavaria this summer weeks ago.
The Frenchman, who can also play as a centre-back, has previously been linked to Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus.
And he seemingly featured on Erik ten Hag’s right-back shortlist ahead of the summer deadline. But the United boss will have to take his search elsewhere.
West Ham United has offered an update on the club’s pursuit of midfield duo Lucas Paqueta and Hans Vanaken.
After West Ham’s 3-0 win at Viborg to qualify for the Europa Conference League on Thursday, Moyes was coy on both players.
He said: “I’ve not heard any more today about either of them. I probably wouldn’t pick anything up until tomorrow morning.”

Chelsea are preparing their fourth offer for Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana, according to The Telegraph.
After seeing an offer worth £70m rejected earlier this week, Chelsea will return to the table with their latest proposal.
And with Fofana now frozen out of Brendan Rodgers’ plans amid his transfer saga, Leicester could be tempted to cash in.
The report claims they are eyeing Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji as the 21-year-old’s replacement, should he leave.
Akanji is thought to be available for £20m, but a loan could also be sanctioned.Chelsea are preparing a fourth bid for Wesley Fofana.Antony’s blockbuster summer transfer to Manchester United is ‘edging closer’, according to Sky Sports.
The report claims talks are advanced after United stated their intention to pay up to £79m, including add-ons, for the Brazilian winger.
Cody Gakpo arriving at Old Trafford with Antony has been labelled ‘not likely – but not impossible’.
And the latter’s big-money move would likely be the final nail in the coffin of United’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong, as a deal for the Barcelona midfielder would become ‘financially unviable’.
Nicolas Pepe has completed his Arsenal exit, joining Nice on a season-long loan.
The Ivorian winger has called an end to his miserable stint in England and is set to spend the 2022/23 season in Ligue 1.
There is no option or obligation to buy in his contract.

Chelsea are accelerating their attempts to sign Everton winger Anthony Gordon in the final week of the summer transfer window.
Kaveh Solhekol reports Gordon has told the Toffees he wants to leave for Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are ready to splash £60m on his services.
He told Sky Sports: “Chelsea are pressing ahead with trying to sign Anthony Gordon, high-level talks are continuing today.
“They’re prepared to pay up to £60m, and we believe he’s told Everton he wants to leave. We’re told there will be developments in the next few hours.”
Dele Alli has left Everton, joining Besiktas on a season-long loan.
The Turkish giants have the option to buy him for either £6m in January or £8m next summer, should they wish to make it permanent.

Barcelona forward Memphis Depay won’t be joining Juventus this summer, by the looks of things…
Fabrizio Romano reports Memphis’ potential deal to join the Serie A giants has now 100 per cent collapsed.
Despite almost agreeing terms over a free transfer that would see Barca terminate his contract, Juve have decided against the move.
Adrien Rabiot’s failed switch to Manchester United changed the Turin outfit’s plans, leading them to pursue Arkadiusz Milik and Leandro Paredes instead.Memphis Depay to Juventus is off.Benfica have multiple options to make Dele Alli’s loan switch from Everton permanent before next summer.
Fabrizio Romano reports the Turkish giants can sign Alli for £6m if they trigger his option-to-buy clause before January 1.
Alli’s price will go up to £8m if they choose to sign him permanently between January 1 and July 1.
Manchester United have started talks over personal terms with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, potentially reigniting the saga of the summer.
According to Sport, De Jong has entered discussions with the Red Devils, who had identified him as their priority target for most of the window.
And the report claims there is a ‘good chance’ the 25-year-old will end up accepting their contract offer.
United’s £70m capture of Real Madrid’s Casemiro was thought to have ended their De Jong chase. But perhaps not…
West Ham United have quickly returned to the table with an improved offer for Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta.
Express Sport understands the Hammers have tabled a bid close to Lyon’s £50m valuation inclusive of add-ons.
West Ham failed with an initial £34m proposal on Tuesday but seem intent on recruiting Paqueta before the September 1 deadline.
Chelsea target Wesley Fofana is poised to be left out of the Leicester squad for a second consecutive game when the two sides face off on Saturday.
The Blues have supposedly tabled three bids for the Frenchman, seeing each one knocked back.
Fofana is trying to force through a move to Stamford Bridge, but Leicester aren’t keen to sell and want £80million before admitting defeat.
Chelsea are reportedly considering Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba as a cheaper alternative.
Manchester United are planning to bid for Real Madrid star Marco Asensio, according to Relevo
The Red Devils nabbed Casemiro from Los Blancos just days ago, with the Brazilian unveiled at Old Trafford ahead of Monday’s win over Liverpool.
Erik ten Hag and co are ‘determined’ to bid for Asensio, with the package likely to be in excess of £25million.
United need extra options in attack, particularly given that Cristiano Ronaldo could leave the club, and Asensio has the versatility to feature in numerous positions.

Arsenal are hesitant to swoop for Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans because they know he will be available for free next summer, according to The Athletic
The Gunners supposedly view Tielemans as an ‘expensive’ option, despite the fact Leicester would likely accept an offer below his market value because he has one year remaining on his contract.
The Belgian is thought to be keen on a switch to north London and is now in a sticky situation, having been frozen out of the Leicester starting XI by Brendan Rodgers.
Newcastle United hope to register Alexander Isak by Friday morning so that he can make his debut against Wolves this weekend, according to The Athletic

The Magpies are poised to smash their transfer record to provide competition for Callum Wilson and Chris Wood up top.
Eddie Howe’s side have already made a promising start to the season with a win and two draws from their opening three matches.
Manchester United have been publicly rejected by Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.
The stopper was believed to be on Erik ten Hag’s shortlist as he scoured the market for options to provide competition for David De Gea.
But the 32-year-old released a social media statement on Thursday morning, which read: “Much has been reported about Manchester United’s interest in the past few days. It is true that there is a written offer. Manchester United is a global club and I hope everyone can understand that I am considering and thinking about an offer like this. Yesterday, however, I informed those responsible at both clubs that I had decided on Eintracht.”
Chelsea outcast Michy Batshuayi is of interest to Serie A side Salernitana, according to Di Marzio
The Italian outfit, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, are on the hunt for a new striker and Batshuayi has slid miles down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
The Belgian has one year remaining on his contract with the option of an extra year. One of the key sticking points of the deal concerns whether Salernitana will have an option to buy, which they would prefer, or an obligation to buy, which Chelsea are pushing for. Michy BatshuayiCristiano Ronaldo will not be moving to Marseille this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano
That’s despite reports claiming that the French outfit could represent one of his last options having asked to leave Manchester United in pursuit of Champions League football.
Marseille are said to be ‘disappointed’ with the rumours as the lucrative deal wouldn’t fit with their project.
Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have all flirted with the idea of signing Ronaldo this summer before ultimately distancing themselves from the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Ex-Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has urged his former side to match Newcastle United’s offer for Real Sociedad forward Alexander Isak.
Barring any late twists, the Magpies look set to complete the £63million signing after their bid was accepted on Wednesday.
The Blues are on the hunt for a new forward and have recently been linked with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
“What a good player [Isak] is,” Cundy told talkSPORT. “I have to say now, I would not be unhappy if Chelsea signed him at all. He’s a lot of money, he’s had a lot of moves considering his age and he hasn’t quite done it, but I think he’s an absolute superstar in the making.
“I think it’s a big, bold move. It’s top-end. He’s worth it in my opinion. Bags of pace, he’s physical – about 6ft 4in, quick, he’s had a tough time with injuries but this is a proper player, this kid.”
Manchester United launched what could be their final bid for Ajax winger Antony on Wednesday night, according to De Telegraaf
After months of tracking the player, Erik ten Hag will hope that an offer in excess of £75million will do the trick and finally tempt his former side to do business.
If accepted, the deal could move quickly with the 22-year-old begging Ajax to cooperate, having already broadly agreed personal terms and scouted out possible houses in and around Manchester.
