Adonai Mitchell injury update: not deemed serious after Georgia football game – 247Sports

No. 2 Georgia is taking on Samford in its 2022 season home opener in Athens on Saturday and while being 2-0 is the ultimate goal, the Dawgs were also hoping to come out of the non-conference matchup without any injuries. That did not happen as sophomore wide receiver Adonai Mitchell went down on the first offensive snap of the game with an apparent ankle injury. Mitchell did not return to the game and Kirby Smart provided an update following the 33-0 win saying the injury does not appear to be serious.
“He probably could’ve gone back in,” Smart said. “We held him out.”
This will be updated as more information comes in. Georgia will play its first road game in the conference opener next week, at South Carolina.
Mitchell played in all 15 games in his true freshman season, making 12 starts, and totaling 29 catches for 426 yards and four touchdowns. He led all wide receivers with 53 percent of the offensive snaps played during the season. He had touchdown catches in both College Football Playoff wins, including the go-ahead score on a 40-yard reception in the fourth quarter of the National Championship.
Everyone was just doing what they could to try to come out with the W. I was, like I said, playing my role,” Mitchell said about that big play against Alabama. “My number ended up being called,” Mitchell said. “It was a great ball by Stetson, and I was fortunate enough to make the catch. I’d say it was probably afterward, when I got to my phone, I realized, ‘Oh dang. This is crazy.’”
Heading into his second season, Mitchell was looked upon by many to step into the unquestioned No. 1 wide receiver role with George Pickens now in the NFL.
“To be honest, I’m just focused on day-by-day, brick-by-brick stuff,” Mitchell said last month in fall camp. “I’m just trying to be the best me I can for the team so I can just play the best role that I can.“[I’m] buying into the process that we go through every day. Coach Kirby, the coaching staff, they help us everyday work to get better. I bought into my role on the team, and it ended up working out.”
