Bills vs. Rams final score, results: Josh Allen & Co. dominate reigning Super Bowl champions Rams to kickoff 2022 season – Sporting News

  • September 10, 2022

In a matchup of Super Bowl hopeful vs. Super Bowl champion, hope sprung eternal Thursday night as the Buffalo Bills dominated the Los Angeles Rams 31-10 on the NFL’s opening kickoff.
Josh Allen was sensational against the Rams, starting the game 5 of 5 for 58 yards passing and finishing 26 of 31 for 297 yards, three touchdowns, and two picks (one of which was dropped by Isaiah McKenzie. Allen was also the Bills’ leading rusher, tucking 10 times for 56 yards and another TD against a Rams defense that looked utterly lost for long stretches of game.
Von Miller also made an impact for the Bills, logging a pair of sacks and disrupting several other plays. “Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer played incredible and gave us time up front to make plays,” Miller said after the game.
The Rams, meanwhile, looked like they were experiencing an especially potent Super Bowl hangover. The offense spun its wheels in the mud for a lot of the game, and Matthew Stafford finished 29 of 41 for 240 yards, a touchdown, and three interceptions. The lack of a running game is also proving to be a serious concern for the Rams, and Cam Akers had limited touches due to what appeared to be a coach’s decision.

It was an emphatic statement for the Bills, who outscored the Rams 21-0 in the second half after going into halftime tied at 10. Even that took some moments of good fortune for Los Angeles, who tied the game at halftime with a 57-yard field goal as time expired. The offense was out of rhythm all night, and it touched every aspect of their game.

(All times Eastern.)
11:08 p.m. — The Rams fail to convert on fourth down and the Bills should take a knee to kill the clock. Dominant second half from the Bills.
11:05 p.m. — At the two-minute warning, Kupp’s dominance continues. He breaks off another big play as the Rams look to score one last time.
11 p.m. — Tyler Higbee picks up another first down for the Rams with 3 minutes left. On the ensuing play, Stafford hits Skowronek for four yards and then misses Skowronek on second down. Third-and-6 incoming for the Rams.
10:58 p.m. — There is some good news for Rams fans (and Cooper Kupp fantasy owners): Kupp has been excellent all night. He gets yet another first down catch as the Rams continue their garbage time drive.
10:55 p.m — Yet another turnover, the seventh of the night between the two teams. This time it’s a Zack Moss fumble recovered by the Rams. Both teams will have plenty to work on coming out of this one.
10:52 p.m. — The Bills are really feeling themselves now. Stafford gets picked off yet again from a tip at the line and the Bills get hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after. The struggles for the defending champs continue.
10:49 p.m. — Play has stopped for a flare on the field.
10:42 p.m. — This game has officially spiraled for the Rams. On third down from his own 47 Allen breaks the pocket again and hits Diggs for a 53-yard touchdown pass behind Jalen Ramsey. It’s Bills 31, Rams 10

10:37 p.m. — Stafford gets picked off for the second time tonight as he throws a pass high to Kupp and it hits off his hands .Jordan Poyer comes down with the pick for the Bills, and Buffalo gets the ball back already up two touchdowns.
10:35 p.m. — Cam Akers gets a rare touch on a swing pass from Stafford, as the Rams try to pick up the tempo with about 12 minutes left.
10:30 p.m. — Allen does it himself from the goal line! The Bills cap off a 13-play 89-yard drive with an Allen touchdown run that features a full extension over Bobby Wagner while being held up. His strength is just insane. Bills 24, Rams 10

10:28 p.m. — Josh Allen stands tall against the Cover 0 blitz from the Rams to hit Gabe Davis for a 47-yard reception, the biggest play of the night. Perfect pass and the Bills are in striking distance once again.

10:25 p.m. — The third quarter ends on an ugly-looking play for Allen, who was being held up by his back leg before eventually being brought down. Quiet quarter outside of the opening drive, but the Bills are driving.
10:22 p.m. — This Bills passing game is impressive everyone. On third-and-5 the Bills bottle up the pass rush and hit Allen hits Jameson Crowder for a first down.
10:19 p.m. — The Bills are still driving with a mix of the run and passing game now. A weird double cross underneath there from the Bills resulted in an injury to fullback Reggie Gilliam. He’s being checked up on now.
10:11 p.m. — Von Miller is still so, so good. He flies around the corner for his second sack on Stafford, and on third down Stafford air mails a pass to force fourth-and-18 for the Rams. Still slow-going for this offense.
.@VonMiller is on pace for a million* sacks with the Bills.

10:10 p.m. — Kupp remains the constant on the Rams offense. Stafford finds him squeezed between two Bills defenders with a perfect pass to get the first down on second-and-10.
10:09 p.m. — The Bills, simply put, don’t respect Stafford on the play action bootleg. They’re flowing to the ball and the Bills seem content to chase him out.
10:04 p.m. — Bills cap off the drive with a touchdown to Isaiah McKenzie on a beautiful stutter route. The Bills take the lead coming out of the half, and Tyler Bass hits the extra point. Bills 17, Rams 10

10:03 p.m. — Singletary is doing some great work in space. After a first down run a few plays ago, he picks up another on second-and-3 after making a man miss.
10:01 p.m. — Josh Allen just ruined Nick Scott’s day on third-and-7. Picks up the first down on a scramble and stiff arms Scott into the dirt. It’s another good opening drive for the Bills coming out of the half. We’ll see if the Rams defense can get another stop.
🚨 Josh Allen stiff arm alert! 🚨

9:58 p.m. — Singletary finally gets into space and breaks off the Bills’ longest run of the night for 12 yards. He gets bottled up by Bobby Wagner on the next play, setting up second-and-9 for Buffalo.
9:54 p.m. — After a bobbled snap from Stafford, he gets sacked by Gregory Rousseau to force a Rams three-and-out. The Bills will start from their own 42-yard line.
9:53 p.m. — The Bills absolutely bottle L.A. on the second half’s opening kickoff, and the Rams are starting just outside their own 10.
9:40 p.m. — It’s a QB showdown in Los Angeles, as Josh Allen closes out the first half 17 of 20 for 153 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Matthew Stafford was 13 of 17 for 95 yards, a touchdown, and a pick of his own. The running game has been quiet outside of an 18-yard carry from Darrell Henderson, who has seven carries for 33 yards total. Devin Singletary, for his part, has four carries for 18 yards.
In the receiving game, it’s a No. 1 receiver dual. Cooper Kupp has eight catches for 56 yards and a touchdown, and Stefon Diggs has six catches for 62 yards. Gabe Davis has three catches for 41 yards and the Bills’ lone touchdown.
9:38 p.m. — The Rams hit an 57-yard field goal to tie it at the half and make it zero-zero coming out of the locker room. Great resilience there from Los Angeles to stave off the Bills’ outstanding offense early. Bills 10, Rams 10
9:37 p.m. — This Bills pass rush has been overwhelming at times in this game, as the whole line just gets blown up on first down. Second-and-19 coming up for Los Angeles with 26 seconds left as the Rams use their second timeout.
9:35 p.m. — Stafford doesn’t like to run, but he does on third-and-1 to convert for the Rams. The drive remains alive from the Bills 29-yard line with 34 seconds left in the half. Timeout Buffalo.
9:32 p.m. — Stafford missed Kupp high on second down, but a hold on third down by Taron Johnson keeps the drive alive for the Rams.
9:31 p.m. — Von Miller just absolutely blew up the first down play and forced Stafford to pitch it away. Second-and-10 from the Bills 45 for L.A.
9:30 p.m. — Coming out of the two-minute warning, Allen is picked off again, this time by Troy Hill. Hill makes a great read on a crossing route to outwit Allen and give the Rams the ball back with 1:52.

9:26 p.m. — The Rams get a too-man-men penalty on third down to make it third-and-7, and the Bills convert with a flawless back-shoulder throw to Diggs to beat Jalen Ramsey. Insane pass.

9:25 p.m. — Allen didn’t like something he saw on that second-and-9 and tried to tuck and run, but Bobby Wagner met him for a three-yard loss to make it third-and-12. The Rams take a timeout to try to get the ball back.
9:24 p.m. — The Bills will start from their own 25 with three minutes left.
9:20 p.m. — The Rams turn it around quickly, as — stop me if you’ve heard this before — Stafford finds Kupp in the corner of the end zone for the first Rams touchdown of the game. Kupp stays as reliable as it gets for the Rams offense. Bills 10, Rams 7

Ed Oliver is injured for Buffalo from the previous series.
9:15 p.m. — And the Rams convert to Kupp again! Kupp was stacked up right at the sticks, but the offensive line pushed him over the marker before the play was whistled dead. Good heads up play by the Rams to keep the drive alive at the Bills 26.
9:14 p.m. — As the Rams spread it out, Jordan Phillips logs a sack on Stafford barreling up the middle for a 10-yard loss. Stafford follows up with a completion to Allen Robinson to make it fourth-and-short. Nice job there to get it back, and they’ll huddle up to go for it.
9:11 p.m. — Good way to address it, as Ben Skowronek converts on third down in space and the Rams keep the ball. Brandon Powell gets a carry, but the Bills get hit with holding to give the Rams a first down. Akers still has just one carry for zero yards.
9:10 p.m. — Tutu Atwell drops a pass on second-and-6 after getting popped before he can secure the catch. The Rams offense is just a bit out of rhythm right now.
9:09 p.m. — The Bills kick the ball out of bounds and the Rams will start from their own 40.
9:05 p.m. — The Rams brought heat and Allen tries to hit Davis on an out route but misses as Davis hits the ground. Bills want pass interference but there’s nothing there. Bills convert on a field goal to make it a two-possession game. Bills 10, Rams 0
9:04 p.m. — Tough running from Zack Moss on a screen after a 21-yard completion on the sideline to Diggs after Troy Hill went for a pick. Moss picks up four after being bottled up and the Bills go right back to him to set up third-and-3.
9:03 p.m. — The Bills convert another third down with a nice timing route to Gabe Davis, and for viewers at home, watch the way the Bills are handling Donald in the trenches. Really impressive work so far, even on downhill downs for the Rams pass rush.
8:58 p.m. — ANOTHER interception, this time from Stafford to the Bills defense, as Dane Jackson undercuts an errant Stafford pass for the third turnover of the half. Still 7-0 Bills early here.

8:57 p.m. — The Bills aren’t getting out of their own way early. James Cook fumbles his first career carry and the Rams recover, so they’ll start with the ball deep in Buffalo territory.

8:54 p.m. — The Bills give up absolutely no ground on third down, as Henderson gets closed on in the backfield by Christian Benford and stopped short. The Rams are unable to capitalize on the turnover, and they punt it to Jameson Crowder, who takes it back to the 32.
8:51 p.m. — Cam Akers is still yet to see the field, as Darrell Henderson Jr. gets yet another carry. The Rams follow up with a completion to Kupp to end the first quarter, so the Rams will have third-and-4 coming out of the break. Bills 7, Rams 0 after one.
8:47 p.m. — The Rams stop the drive with a bit of good fortune! Isaiah McKenzie drops a slant route from Allen that gets picked off by Terrell Lewis. Potentially huge play there for the L.A. defense, which was floundering leading up to that play.
8:46 p.m. — The Rams get hit by horse-collar penalty on a checkdown to Dawson Knox. The Bills are cooking with gas again, and are at the Rams 33-yard line with first-and-10.
8:44 p.m. —It’s hard to put into words how good the throw Allen just made to convert that third down was. He just threw a dart to Diggs behind two Rams to keep the Bills’ drive alive. Terrific pass.
8:43 p.m. — Donald records his first sack of the season as Allen tries to climb the pocket. Just a ridiculous show of strength from the superstar defensive lineman. Impossible to answer.

8:40 p.m. — The Bills will start this next drive from their own nine, as Josh Allen looks to build on his 5 of 5, 58-yard start.
8:38 p.m. — The Rams had gotten into Bills territory, but Von Miller records a sack against his former team to knock them right back out. The Rams are forced to punt after a completion to Kupp underneath falls short of the sticks. Bills defense wins the first bout of the night.

8:36 p.m. — The Rams convert to, perhaps unsurprisingly, Cooper Kupp! Kupp sneaks behind the zone defense to give the Rams a fresh set of downs. Good-looking play there.
8:35 p.m. — The Rams are behind the sticks on their opening drive, with a false start after a five-yard gain from Darrell Henderson Jr. It’s third-and-8.
8:30 p.m. — On third-and-short, the Bills convert and then some! Allen runs play action into a bootleg and drops an easy pass into a wide-open Gabe Davis to put the Bills up early. 5:04 on the 75-yard drive for the Bills. Bills 7, Rams 0

8:29 p.m. — The Rams defensive line does a decent job getting to Allen on his first non-timing play, but he breaks the pocket and throws a dart to Zack Moss on the move to come up just short of a first down.
8:28 p.m. — The ROI from Diggs is already high. Bills aren’t doing anything groundbreaking, just getting guys in space, as they convert another quick-hitter to their No. 1 receiver. Buffalo is chugging early.
8:27 p.m. — The Bills are getting a few people involved early, with Diggs, Allen, and now Devin Singletary being involved in first down conversions. They’re now already in Los Angeles territory.
8:25 p.m. — Josh Allen shows off his outstanding legs early, as he tucks and runs on second-and-4 after a completion to Stefon Diggs. Showcasing his versatility early.
8:24 p.m. — And we are underway on the 2022 season! The Bills take the kickoff and will start from the 25-yard line. Welcome!
8:17 p.m. — Von Miller sported a Bruce Smith shirt during Bills warm-ups. Don’t question whether or not he’s in on the Bills culture.
