College football bowl projections: Georgia passes Alabama in playoff – USA TODAY

  • September 9, 2022

There are 14 weeks in college football’s regular season, so using the first full Saturday to make definitive statements about where teams will finish in December are always problematic.
There will be an ebb and flow of performances during the next three months as teams grow in experience or regress due to injuries or poor play.
So there are not many changes at the top of this week’s bowl projections with one corollary: Georgia is moving up to the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff after its dominating performance against Oregon.
Yes, it’s only one data point, but the improvement of the Bulldogs on offense was noticeably striking and gives credence to the idea that this year’s team might be better than last year’s national champion that had one of the all-time great defenses.
Time will tell, but for now, they look the part and would be a slight favorite against Alabama if their long-expected matchup of unbeatens takes place in the SEC championship game.

There rest of the playoff field from the preseason remains as does the lineup for the New Year’s Six. Utah’s loss to Florida doesn’t change its status as the favorite in the Pac-12. Clemson’s shaky first three quarters against Georgia Tech won’t create an overreaction for now, but the race is the ACC looks to be wide-open for the time being.
