Chelsea vs. Tottenham result: Harry Kane scores stoppage-time equaliser as Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel clash – Sporting News

  • September 9, 2022

Harry Kane scored a stoppage-time equaliser as Tottenham Hotspur snatched a 2-2 draw from a bad-tempered encounter against Chelsea in which Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel clashed.
Reece James’ strike on 78 minutes looked to have given the Blues all three points in this London derby at Stamford Bridge, but Kane flicked home a corner kick in the 96th minute to salvage a point for the visitors.
Chelsea dominated much of the match and opened the scoring through Kalidou Koulibaly who registered his first Premier League goal in spectacular fashion, thumping home a volley from a Marc Cucurella corner.
Spurs levelled in the second half in controversial circumstances when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg struck past Edouard Mendy despite Chelsea’s appeals about a potential foul and offside. This prompted the first clash between Conte and Tuchel on the touchline.
Sterling set up James to put Chelsea 2-1 ahead with just 12 minutes left, but Kane had the final say, nodding home deep into added time. Conte and Tuchel were again involved in an angry confrontation after the final whistle, the Chelsea boss pulling Conte towards him after a handshake, and both were shown red cards.

The Premier League has witnessed many managerial clashes over the years and the growing animosity between Conte and Tuchel was on full show over the course of this match and even after the contest had finished when both coaches were sent off by Anthony Taylor.
SPURS ARE LEVEL! 😲

And it’s KICKING OFF on the bench… TUCHEL VS CONTE 😤 pic.twitter.com/U6dWgrWFoo
This was a high-energy, high-intensity encounter and this was reflected in the conduct of Conte and Tuchel on the touchline. The Premier League has lacked managerial beef for years. This rivalry could add another edge to England’s top flight. It was box office for what happened on and off the pitch.
Chelsea attempted 23 crosses against Tottenham and completed just four. That illustrates many of the issues the home team experienced in making the most of their dominance of the ball and territory with Spurs comfortable repelling the aimless deliveries into their box.
Kai Havertz is capable of winning a challenge in the air with Koulibaly and Thiago Silva a threat from corners, but Chelsea’s frontline isn’t built to get on the end of crosses into the box from open play. This is surely something Tuchel will analyse after the match.
On the balance of play, Chelsea were the superior team over 90 minutes of this match. The Blues registered more shots than Spurs and also finished with a higher expected goals figure (1.53 to 1.06). However, the changes made by Conte in the second half worked and were a big factor in Tottenham snatching a point.
“I think Richarlison made a difference” @Carra23 says Richarlison gave Spurs the energy they needed when he came on ⚡ pic.twitter.com/gEweWlnxNt
The decision to withdraw Ryan Sessegnon for Richarlison shifted Spurs into a 4-2-4 shape. This conceded control in the centre of the pitch, but it made the match a more open affair and gave Tottenham the chance to get in behind more frequently. It was a gamble, but it paid off.
Cucurella and Koulibaly combined for Chelsea’s opening goal and the Blues’ new signings are already making their presence known. While Conte has chosen largely to hold back his new additions in the first two games of the season, Tuchel has recognised the need to throw them straight in.
Sterling has still to score his first Premier League goal as a Chelsea player, but he contributed an assist in this match. Meanwhile, Cucurella gave Chelsea an outlet down the left side while Koulibaly has added physicality and presence to their backline. All three players have improved Tuchel’s team.

SENT OFF! Conte and Tuchel are both shown red cards by the referee for their role in the scrap at the end of the match!
FULL TIME: Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham – The referee blows full time on the match, but there’s still time for one last flare up between Conte and Tuchel! A scrap follows! This has been a bad tempered encounter, but the two teams have to share the points!
TUCHEL VS CONTE: ROUND TWO!!! 🤬🤬 pic.twitter.com/XhWuOU4fwD
90+6 mins: GOAL! Chelsea 2 Tottenham 2 (90+6′ Kane) – A late, late equaliser! It might even have been the last touch of the match! It’s not quite clear who got the final touch, but Richarlison got a flick on from the corner kick and the ball ends up in the back of the net! It might have been Kane!
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!!!

Spurs steal a point in the 96th minute!! WOW!! ⚪ pic.twitter.com/cDrTfFdJpv
90+4 mins: James gives away a freekick in a dangerous position. Spurs get the delivery into the area, Chelsea defend it to the edge of the box where Bissouma strikes it on the volley, but it takes a deflection and flashes over. Mendy then makes a save from a Davies header!
90+1 mins: There will be SIX minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match. Can Chelsea hold on?
90 mins: Chelsea sub – Havertz OFF, Broja ON. Havertz gets a standing ovation as he walks off. The German was quiet in the first half, and should have scored in the second half, but he was an important figure for the Blues in this match.
89 mins: Remember I mentioned the incredible scoring record of Chelsea’s defenders after Koulibaly’s opener?

87 mins: Do Spurs have anything left in the tank? They are still in this match and can salvage something from it, but Chelsea are on top. They are attempting to see out this result by dominating possession. Spurs have struggled through the middle of the pitch.
85 mins: Chelsea sub – Kante and Sterling OFF, Gallagher and Pulisic ON. Kante has to come off with an injury and on comes Gallagher for his home Premier League debut as a Chelsea player.
82 mins: This is a worry for Chelsea! Kante has hit the ground with an apparent injury. The Frenchman is such an important player for the Blues.
78 mins: GOAL! Chelsea 2 (78′ James) Tottenham 1 – Chelsea are back ahead! Sterling feeds James just inside the box and the right back finishes past Lloris! Tuchel goes racing down the Stamford Bridge touchline in celebration! Just as Spurs had got level!
ABSOLUTE SCENES!! 🤯

Reece James fires Chelsea back in front! The space he had… 😬 pic.twitter.com/FTGOafBd4v
75 mins: How has he missed?! The cross from James on the right side was exceptional, it put the chance on a plate for Havertz who had a clear shot on goal from six yards out, but the German somehow manages to put his effort wide of the post!
70 mins: Taylor called for a cooling break immediately after the goal. The goal was checked and it stands despite Chelsea’s complaints about a foul and a potential offside from Richarlison who was between the shooter and the goalkeeper. Did he interfere?
68 mins: GOAL! Chelsea 1 Tottenham 1 (68′ Hojbjerg) – An equaliser! Hjobjerg fires the ball into the bottom corner of the Chelsea net from the edge of the box and it’s all kicking off on the touchline with Conte and Tuchel clashing! Chelsea aren’t happy about what they saw as a foul on Havertz.
SPURS ARE LEVEL! 😲

67 mins: Sterling does very well at the byline to create the space for a shot and send a delivery into the area, but once again Chelsea don’t have anyone to take advantage of an opportunity like that. That has been a common theme throughout this whole match.
65 mins: This match is becoming increasingly stretched, which might be to Tottenham’s benefit because they have the pace to get in behind the Chelsea defensive line.
62 mins: What a chance! That was a HUGE opportunity for Spurs to equalise with Kane released through on goal on the counter attack, but the England captain drags his effort wide of the far post! He just didn’t make the desired contact!
61 mins: STERLING… over! Loftus-Cheek dribbles into the box, somehow rides a couple of Spurs tackles, the ball falls to Sterling, he steadies himself for the shot, but fires over the target when he probably should have found the back of the net! What a chance!
Sterling with a HUGE opportunity to double Chelsea’s lead! 😲 pic.twitter.com/Biep8a8IJk
59 mins: The early signs are that Conte has shifted into a back four and a front four which is giving Spurs just two central midfielders in the middle of the pitch. Let’s see how that plays out!
57 mins: Spurs sub – Sessegnon OFF, Richarlison. Conte makes his first change of the match and it might signal a shift to a back four for Tottenham. Richarlison is on for his Spurs debut.
54 mins: Chelsea have sent a lot of crosses into the Tottenham penalty area this afternoon, but they don’t really have a player in the middle who can make the most of those opportunities, at least from open play.
51 mins: Not far over! Mount’s cross into the middle is mishit, but the Chelsea midfielder very nearly catches out Lloris who was scrambling to get back. It flashes just over the bar, but it must have taken a touch because Chelsea have a corner which Spurs defend.
48 mins: The angle was tight for Son! The ball was played through for the South Korean by Kane, but Son allowed it to run across him and by the time he did that the angle was narrow and Mendy made the save!
46 mins: The second half is under way! Surprisingly, Conte hasn’t made any changes to his Spurs team in terms of the personnel on the pitch.
45+3 mins: HALF TIME: Chelsea 1 (Koulibaly 20′) Tottenham 0 – Koulibaly’s volley is the difference between the two teams at the break, but in truth the scoreline doesn’t truly reflect Chelsea’s dominance in the opening 45 minutes. Spurs have to improve!
45 mins: There will be three minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the first half.
43 mins: Will Conte make changes to his team at the interval? Tottenham have been poor in this first half and deserve to be behind, but the positive is that they are only losing 1-0. They can still salvage something from this in the second period, but improvements are needed.
41 mins: BOOKING – James (Chelsea). That’s an easy decision for the referee who books James for a cynical foul on Son.
40 mins: Spurs defend a corner kick well for the first time in the match and come away on the counter attack. Son is hauled down by James who takes the first yellow card of the afternoon. That could have been a dangerous situation for Chelsea.
37 mins: This has been a very different performance from Tottenham compared to the display produced against Southampton. They have looked slow, sluggish. Chelsea are well on top and are looking for a second goal.
35 mins: Chelsea’s defenders offer such goal threat. Koulibaly already looks the part for the Blues following his summer switch from Napoli!

30 mins: Back under way after the cooling break, but Chelsea are still on top. We have heard a lot about Conte’s focus on fitness as Tottenham manager, but it’s the home team that looks the sharpest in the heat in this first half.
26 mins: Koulibaly again! Another corner kick is directed towards Koulibaly in the penalty box, but this time he slices high and wide of the target. That brings us to the first cooling break of the match.
24 mins: You’d have to say this has been a dominant performance by Chelsea in the opening 25 minutes of this match. They have scored the opening goal and they are suffocating Spurs with their use of the ball.
20 mins: GOAL! Chelsea 1 (20′ Koulibaly) Tottenham 0 – What a goal! Koulibaly meets a Cucurella corner kick on the full volley and he finds the top corner of the Tottenham net to put Chelsea ahead! Incredible finish by the centre back!
CUCURELLA ➡️ KOULIBALY 💥

19 mins: HAVERTZ… across the face! That’s the best opening of the match so far! Sterling played a lovely backheel pass into Havertz, but he shoots across the face of goal and just wide! In fact, it got a very slight touch from Lloris.
17 mins: Koulibaly gets the shot away in the end after a prolonged passing move from Chelsea. The home team are applying pressure, but they are lacking presence around the box. Spurs are finding it easy to repel the crosses being played into their area.
15 mins: Something to keep an eye on…
Kulusevski was a little lucky not to be sent off for elbowing Cucurella when Spurs played Brighton in April. They’re already nibbling away at each other here.
13 mins: Conte has been passing instructions to Sessegnon during the early stages of this match. He was very impressive in the win over Southampton last weekend, but the youngster is still very raw. Sessegnon is being moulded by Conte this season.
9 mins: Kante gets the ball into the Tottenham penalty box, but nobody in a blue shirt attacks it. Is that maybe where Chelsea are lacking an instinctive number nine?
7 mins: This is how Chelsea fans welcomed new owner Boehly to Stamford Bridge for his first Premier League as the club’s new owner…

5 mins: It’s been an energetic start at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have edged possession, but they haven’t been able to feed any of their frontline yet.
2 mins: That was an opportunity for Tottenham. Jorginho lost the ball in the centre of the pitch, Kulusevski spread the pass out to Son, but he took too long to do something with it and Chelsea were able to get back and recover.
1 min: The match is under way at Stamford Bridge! Chelsea are in their familiar blue kit while Tottenham Hotspur are also wearing their home kit – white shirts and navy blue shorts.
5 mins to kickoff: The two teams are out on the pitch at Stamford Bridge ahead of kickoff. It looks and sounds like an excellent atmosphere for this London derby!
10 mins to kickoff: Of course, this isn’t just a first home league match for Cucurella, Koulibaly and Sterling, it’s Todd Boehly’s first Premier League match at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea owner. The American businessman has shown a willingness to spend in the transfer market this summer!
20 mins to kickoff: Not long until kick off at Stamford Bridge. Who do you fancy to pick up three points from this match? Can either Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur challenge for the Premier League title this season?
30 mins to kickoff: The teams are out for their warm-up at Stamford Bridge, although the chances are they are already pretty warm in this sunshine!
This promises to be the most compelling fixture in the Premier League this weekend. City and Liverpool might be the dominant duo, but if anyone is going to stick with them this season it’s most likely to be one of Chelsea or Spurs.
Out in the sunshine! ☀️ #CheTot pic.twitter.com/isaYvMMHm9
40 mins to kickoff: Chelsea will surely need more from their frontline this afternoon than they got at Goodison Park last weekend. Sterling played well last weekend, but Havertz and Mount were quiet.
50 mins to kickoff: Unsurprisingly, Conte sticks with the same team that demolished Southampton last week. Kulusevski keeps his place in the side which makes this an attacking selection by Spurs.

60 mins to kickoff: Cucurella starts! Tuchel has made the decision to give Cucurella his first start as a Chelsea player. There’s also a place in the XI for Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

70 mins to kickoff: Tottenham were very impressive in their 4-1 win over Southampton on opening weekend. Dejan Kulusevski was one of the best players on the pitch – will he start again today? Or will Antonio Conte pack the centre of the pitch with another central midfielder?

80 mins to kickoff: Will Marc Cucurella be handed his first start as a Chelsea player this afternoon? The former Barcelona left back was impressive off the bench against Everton. Kalidou Koulibaly and Raheem Sterling are expected to start once again for the Blues.
90 mins to kickoff: It will be interesting to see if Thomas Tuchel sticks with the same XI that started at Goodison Park last weekend. Chelsea got the three points in a 1-0 win over Everton, but they played like a team that is still figuring some things out, particularly in attack.
100 mins to kickoff: The heat at Stamford Bridge could be a factor in this afternoon’s match. It is genuinely very warm. There will be cooling breaks, just as there has been throughout the Premier League this weekend.
it’s very hot pic.twitter.com/cco2Q9Dy6F
110 mins to kickoff: Chelsea and Tottenham both started their 2022/23 Premier League campaigns with wins on opening weekend. This, however, will be a better gauge of where these two teams are and how strong they are right now.
Two hours to kickoff: The big theme of this match will be whether Tottenham can show they are more competitive against Chelsea than they were last season (outscored 8-0 over four matches). Here’s what the two coaches had to say about it.
“I’m not a journalist, you can tell better than me” 😂

Tuchel on Conte’s comments last season about a gap between Chelsea and Tottenham: “I don’t believe everything Antonio Conte says before and after games.

“I admire him a lot and I believe every team he trains competes for everything. This is what he proves right now.” #CFC

Kalidou Koulibaly was substituted during the second half at Everton, but Tuchel confirmed the former Napoli defender was merely suffering from cramps and he starts again. Left wingback Marc Cucurella has been handed his first start as a Chelsea player with Ben Chilwell dropped to the bench.
Tuchel sticks with the same frontline that started against Everton, but Ruben Loftus-Cheek comes into the team which could push Reece James back into right centre back.
Chelsea lineup (3-4-3, right to left): Mendy (GK) — James, Thiago Silva, Koulibaly — Loftus-Cheek, Kante, Jorginho, Cucurella — Mount, Havertz; Sterling.
Five of Antonio Conte’s summer signings had to be content with a place on the bench against Southampton on opening weekend and the Spurs manager has stuck with the same team after such an emphatic display.
Richarlison is available after suspension but only joins the substitutes which isn’t surprising given how lethal Dejan Kulusevski, Son Heung-min and Harry Kane looked in tandem.
Tottenham lineup (3-4-3): Lloris (GK) — Romero, Dier, Davies — Emerson, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Sessegnon — Kulusevski, Son; Kane.
